Traditional Tet Celebrations in Da Lat
Vietnamese Customs with Highland Twist
Family Gatherings: Da Lat families gather around pine wood fires rather than traditional charcoal, creating a unique aromatic atmosphere. Many Vietnamese families rent highland villas specifically for multi-generational Tet gatherings.
Ancestor Worship: Temple visits begin before dawn, with morning mist creating mystical scenes at Linh Phuoc Pagoda and Truc Lam Monastery. The cool climate allows for longer, more comfortable temple visits.
First Footing (Xong Dat): Da Lat residents often choose visitors with "good energy" to be the first person entering their home, believing this influences the year's fortune.
K'Ho Indigenous Tet Traditions
Yang Bay Ceremony: K'Ho communities perform traditional buffalo sacrifice ceremonies and rice wine rituals to ensure agricultural prosperity. Visitors can observe (respectfully) these authentic indigenous celebrations.
Forest Blessing Rituals: K'Ho shamans conduct pine forest blessing ceremonies, unique to Da Lat's highland environment. These rituals honor both ancestors and the mountain spirits.
Traditional Music: K'Ho gong performances and folk songs accompany community feasts, creating haunting melodies that echo through the pine forests.

Da Lat's highland location creates a unique Tet atmosphere with cool weather allowing for bonfires, outdoor gatherings, and comfortable temple visits. The city blends Vietnamese traditions with K'Ho indigenous customs, creating distinctive rituals like pine wood cooking fires and forest blessing ceremonies. The cooler climate means visitors can enjoy extended outdoor celebrations without the heat and humidity found in southern Vietnam.
How far in advance should I book accommodation for Tet in Da Lat?
Book at least 2-3 months in advance for Tet in Da Lat. Accommodation prices typically increase 50-100% during Tet week, with many properties requiring minimum 3-4 night stays. Popular hotels and resorts often sell out completely, especially family-friendly properties that cater to multi-generational Vietnamese families celebrating together. Consider booking immediately after the previous year's Tet for the best selection and prices.
Are restaurants and attractions open during Tet week in Da Lat?
Many local Vietnamese restaurants and small businesses close for 2-3 days (January 29-31, 2027) during peak Tet celebrations as families gather together. However, tourist-oriented restaurants, hotels, and major attractions typically remain open with modified hours. Street food vendors and night markets often operate with reduced stalls. Plan ahead and confirm operating hours, especially for specific restaurants or activities you don't want to miss.
What should I wear to Da Lat's Tet celebrations?
Dress in layers for Da Lat's cool highland climate during Tet season. Temperatures range from 12-22°C, so bring light jackets for morning and evening. Wear modest clothing when visiting temples (long pants, covered shoulders). Avoid black or white clothing during Tet celebrations as these colors are associated with funerals in Vietnamese culture. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for temple visits and navigating crowded markets.
Can foreign tourists participate in traditional Tet activities?
Foreign tourists are generally welcome to observe and respectfully participate in public Tet celebrations like temple visits, cultural performances, and market activities. However, family gatherings and ancestor worship ceremonies are typically private. Many hotels and tour companies offer special Tet cultural experiences designed for international visitors.
