Driver Charged with Murder After Ramming Car into Crowd at Da Lat Bus Station
Police Upgrade Charges in Bus Station Incident
A 26-year-old Da Lat man who drove his car into a crowd at the city's inter-provincial bus station last month now faces murder charges, according to Lam Dong Province police officials.
Tran Van Quoc, a resident of Lam Vien Ward, was formally charged with murder on March 5th after investigators upgraded the initial charge of "public order disruption," reported Tuoi Tre. Major General Truong Minh Duong, Director of Lam Dong Province Police, confirmed that authorities have issued an arrest warrant and detention order for the suspect.
The February 25th Incident
The dramatic incident unfolded around 3 PM on February 25th at the Anh Phat gas station (1 To Hien Thanh Street, Xuan Huong Ward), located within the busy inter-provincial bus terminal complex. According to police reports, Quoc had been involved in a physical altercation with another man at the location before the vehicle attack occurred.
After the initial confrontation, Quoc got into his car and drove multiple loops around the bus station area while under the influence of alcohol, sources indicate. In what witnesses described as a terrifying scene, he then deliberately rammed his vehicle into a crowd of people gathered near the gas station, causing multiple injuries and widespread panic among bystanders.
Several people suffered cuts and soft tissue injuries in the attack. The busy bus terminal, a major transportation hub connecting Da Lat to other provinces, was thrown into chaos as people fled the scene.
Swift Police Response
Quoc attempted to flee the scene but was quickly apprehended by local authorities and brought to Xuan Huong Ward Police Station for questioning. A breathalyzer test revealed his blood alcohol content was 0.238 mg/l, well above the legal limit, while drug tests came back negative.
"The decision to prosecute and detain has been implemented by competent authorities," Major General Duong told reporters, explaining that the investigation's findings led to the more serious murder charge.
This incident has shaken the local community, particularly given the location's importance as a gathering place for both residents and tourists traveling through Da Lat.
