Tragic Accident Claims Life on Treacherous Mountain Pass
A devastating traffic accident on the notorious Bao Loc Pass claimed the life of a truck driver yesterday afternoon, serving as another stark reminder of the dangers facing those who navigate this challenging mountain route between Đà Lạt and Ho Chi Minh City.
According to initial reports from Thanh Niên, the tragedy unfolded around 12:10 PM on February 3rd when a truck with license plate 84C-108.90 lost control while descending the pass on National Highway 20. The vehicle was driven by Lê Hữu Thịnh, a 35-year-old driver from Trà Vinh Ward in Vĩnh Long Province, with his assistant Lê Văn Tuệ aboard.
Brake Failure Leads to Fatal Plunge
The accident occurred at a sharp curve near Km104 of Bao Loc Pass, in the Đài Đức Mẹ area of Đạ Huoai 2 commune. Sources report that the truck suddenly experienced brake failure, sending the vehicle careening off the roadway and into a deep ravine approximately 5 meters below.
Local residents familiar with this stretch of highway know it as one of the most treacherous sections of the journey between our mountain city and the lowlands. The steep gradient and sharp curves have claimed numerous vehicles over the years, making it a constant concern for both local authorities and traveling merchants.
Rescue Efforts and Investigation
The impact was severe, with forest trees partially breaking the truck's fall before it came to rest upside down in the ravine. The cabin and truck body were heavily deformed from the violent collision. Driver Lê Hữu Thịnh was trapped in the cabin and died at the scene, while his assistant sustained injuries and was rushed by local residents to Lam Dong II Hospital for emergency treatment.
By early evening, local authorities had successfully recovered the victim's body from the wreckage. The accident has once again highlighted the urgent need for improved safety measures on this vital transportation route that connects Đà Lạt's agricultural products with markets in southern Vietnam.
