Đồi Cù Golf Project Stalled as Province Seeks PM's Help
Province Appeals to Prime Minister Over Major Golf Development
Lâm Đồng province is seeking intervention from Vietnam's Prime Minister to resolve complications surrounding the troubled Đồi Cù - Đà Lạt Palace Golf Course project, according to Thanh Niên newspaper.
The 2 trillion VND (approximately $80 million USD) development has become entangled in regulatory issues after a Central Inspection Committee review earlier this year. The committee identified seven violations within the project, casting uncertainty over one of Đà Lạt's most ambitious tourism developments.
Progress Made, Challenges Remain
According to provincial reports, Lâm Đồng has successfully addressed four of the seven violations identified in the August 12, 2024 notification. However, three critical issues remain unresolved, prompting the province to seek higher-level intervention.
The primary obstacle centers on determining whether the golf course falls within Zone 2 of the Xuân Hương Lake National Scenic Heritage Site. This designation carries significant regulatory implications for any development in the area surrounding Đà Lạt's iconic central lake.
Local Impact and Heritage Concerns
For Đà Lạt residents familiar with the Đồi Cù area, this project represents a significant shift in the city's landscape. The proposed golf course would transform rolling hills that have long been part of the city's scenic backdrop, visible from many vantage points around central Đà Lạt.
The heritage site classification question is particularly sensitive, as Xuân Hương Lake serves as the heart of Đà Lạt's tourism appeal. Any development affecting the lake's protected zones must balance economic development with preservation of the city's unique character.
Next Steps
Provincial authorities plan to establish a working group to collaborate with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to clarify the project's status relative to heritage protection zones. This consultation aims to determine definitively whether the Đồi Cù golf course and clubhouse facilities encroach upon protected areas.
The resolution of this case could set important precedents for future tourism development projects in Đà Lạt, where balancing growth with heritage preservation remains an ongoing challenge for local authorities.
