Da Lat Bus Operators Consider Fare Hikes as Fuel Prices Surge 40%

Rising Fuel Costs Hit Da Lat transportation Hard

Bus operators serving routes from Da Lat and surrounding Lam Dong province are grappling with a dramatic surge in fuel costs, with diesel prices jumping up to 40% in recent weeks. The steep increase is forcing many transportation companies to consider raising passenger fares to stay afloat.

According to Thanh Nien newspaper, the impact is being felt most acutely on long-distance routes. Nguyen Trung, who operates contract buses on the Phan Thiet-Ho Chi Minh City route with a fleet of four vehicles, reports that each round trip now requires an additional 900,000 to 1.2 million VND in fuel costs per vehicle.

Local Routes Face Similar Pressures

The situation is equally challenging for operators serving Da Lat's popular tourist routes. Nguyen Van Hien, Director of Thanh Lich Passenger Transport Company in Phu Thuy ward, told reporters that fuel costs for the Phan Thiet-Da Lat route have skyrocketed. Previously, a 45-seat sleeper bus required approximately 4.3 million VND in fuel per trip, but current costs have pushed this figure significantly higher.

For Da Lat's tourism-dependent economy, these developments could have ripple effects. The city relies heavily on accessible transportation to bring visitors from Ho Chi Minh City, Nha Trang, and other major cities to experience its cool climate and famous attractions along Tran Hung Dao and around Xuan Huong Lake.

Highway Tolls Add to the Burden

Adding to operators' woes are increased toll fees on the Phan Thiet-Dau Giay and Dau Giay-Long Thanh-Ho Chi Minh City expressways, which now cost over 200,000 VND per trip. These routes are crucial for connecting Da Lat to the economic hub of southern Vietnam.

Fare Increases on the Horizon

With monthly fuel costs potentially rising by tens of millions of VND, bus operators say they have little choice but to adjust ticket prices upward. "We can only compensate by raising fares," Trung explained to Thanh Nien.

For residents and tourists planning trips to or from Da Lat, these potential fare increases could make travel more expensive just as the city enters its peak tourist season.
