Local Man Investigated for Cutting Cherry Blossom Branch in Đà Lạt
A local man has been questioned by police in Đà Lạt after a video surfaced showing him cutting a branch from a cherry blossom tree in the public area near the provincial office on Quang Trung Street. The incident, which has sparked outrage among residents, highlights the ongoing challenge of protecting Đà Lạt’s iconic cherry blossoms from damage.
According to the local government of Lâm Viên Ward, the man involved, Mr. T.T.S. (36), was one of two individuals seen in the viral video. The footage shows him cutting a branch from a cherry blossom tree in the early hours of February 5, then quickly loading it onto a minibus with the help of another man, Mr. H., who works at a nearby transport company. The branch was reportedly taken for use during the Lunar New Year celebrations.
"I was working at a nearby café when Mr. H. asked me to help cut a branch for him," Mr. S. told police during the investigation. "I didn’t know it was a protected tree. I just thought it was a normal request." Despite his explanation, the act has upset many locals who see the cherry blossoms as a vital part of Đà Lạt’s identity and tourism appeal.
Cherry blossom trees are a common sight in Đà Lạt, especially near the city’s universities and public buildings, where they are planted and maintained by the local government to enhance the city’s beauty and attract visitors. In recent years, authorities have repeatedly warned against damaging these trees, but incidents continue to occur.
The local government has stated that they are still investigating Mr. H. and will take appropriate action in accordance with the law. The incident has once again reminded residents and visitors alike of the importance of preserving Đà Lạt’s natural and cultural heritage.
As one local put it, "These trees are part of our city’s soul. We all have a responsibility to protect them."
